Recovery Compression Therapy · Performance recovery

Recovery compression therapy on the Gold Coast.

Pneumatic compression boots, ice baths, infrared and the recovery modalities that help after big training sessions, long-haul flights or competitive events. Used alongside our broader physio and sports medicine services — not as a magic shortcut.

What recovery compression therapy actually does.

Pneumatic compression boots (think pneumatic leg sleeves with sequential inflation) use rhythmic pressure changes to promote venous return and lymphatic drainage in the legs. The effect is improved clearance of metabolic by-products from working muscles, reduced post-exercise swelling, and a subjective improvement in muscle recovery between training sessions.

The evidence on compression therapy for performance recovery is mixed — there’s good evidence it speeds clearance of swelling and feels good, less evidence that it changes hard performance markers in the next session. We’re straight with our athletes about what it does and doesn’t do.

That said, for the right people — athletes in heavy training blocks, post-event recovery, long-haul travel recovery, post-surgical leg swelling — compression therapy is a useful and pleasant adjunct to our broader recovery and rehab services.

When recovery compression helps

Six common reasons people book compression sessions.

These are the scenarios where compression boots earn their place in our clinic.

01
Post-training recovery in heavy blocks
Endurance athletes mid-training-camp, footballers mid-pre-season. The cumulative load of consecutive heavy sessions where recovery time is limited.
02
Post-event recovery
After a big race, game or tournament. Combined with rest, hydration and nutrition, compression helps the body process the load faster.
03
Long-haul travel recovery
Off the plane and into competition? Compression boots after a long flight reduce leg swelling and the heavy-leg feeling that hurts performance.
04
Lymphoedema management
For patients with stable lymphoedema, sequential compression is part of standard care. Often used as an adjunct to specialist lymphoedema therapy.
05
Post-surgical leg swelling
After joint surgery, vein surgery or trauma. Pneumatic compression speeds the resolution of swelling and supports rehab.
06
Older adults with venous insufficiency
For people with stable venous insufficiency where compression stockings aren’t enough, intermittent pneumatic compression at the clinic can be useful.
How we approach it

Three steps from first visit to outcome.

01
Assessment.
A 30-minute initial consultation. We discuss what you’re trying to achieve, screen for any contraindications (DVT history, severe peripheral vascular disease, certain cardiac conditions), and explain what compression therapy realistically does.
02
Treatment plan.
A compression session: 30-45 minutes in the pneumatic boots, at intensity settings appropriate for your situation. Many patients combine it with a physio appointment or use it after a clinical pilates session.
03
Review and progression.
Adjusted based on what you’re finding helpful. Some patients use compression occasionally around big events; others use it as a regular weekly recovery session.
