Post-Surgery Rehabilitation Gold Coast: Structured Recovery That Matches Your Surgeon’s Plan
What you do in the 12 weeks after surgery often matters more than the surgery itself. At Ace Health Centre, our Gold Coast physiotherapy team builds individualised post-operative rehabilitation programs aligned with the leading orthopaedic and spinal surgeons across South-East Queensland.
We see patients across the full surgical spectrum — from ACL reconstructions and total knee replacements to rotator cuff repairs, hip arthroscopies and post-spinal-fusion recovery. Our role is to take the protocol your surgeon has set, translate it into a week-by-week loading plan, and progress you safely back to work, sport and the activities you love.
Surgical Rehab We Provide
- ACL & knee ligament reconstruction — full 9 to 12-month return-to-sport pathway.
- Meniscus repair and meniscectomy — early-mobilisation through to dynamic loading.
- Total knee replacement (TKR) — range, strength and functional milestones.
- Total hip replacement (THR) — early mobility, hip-precaution adherence, gait retraining.
- Rotator cuff repair — surgeon-aligned passive, active-assisted and progressive loading phases.
- Shoulder stabilisation surgery — labral and Bankart repair recovery.
- Spinal fusion and microdiscectomy — early-mobility programs and lumbar-stabilisation rehab.
- Foot and ankle surgery — co-managed with our podiatry team for biomechanics.
- Sports hernia and groin surgery — return-to-running and return-to-sport progressions.
The Phases of Surgical Rehabilitation
For general guidance on recovering after an operation, see the Healthdirect surgery recovery information.
Phase 1 — Protect & Activate (Weeks 0–6)
The focus in the early weeks is protecting the surgical repair, controlling swelling, restoring range of motion within surgeon-imposed limits, and re-engaging the muscles that have switched off after surgery. Sessions involve manual therapy, soft-tissue work, education and very gentle activation.
Phase 2 — Restore Function (Weeks 6–12)
Progressive loading begins. We rebuild strength, restore full range of motion and re-train the movement patterns that were impaired pre-surgery. Reformer Pilates is often introduced in this phase for controlled, low-impact loading.
Phase 3 — Build Capacity (Weeks 12–24)
Heavy resistance training, gym-based programming and sport-specific drills build the strength reserves you need to return to full activity without re-injury. Class IV laser therapy and shockwave are used where indicated to accelerate tissue healing.
Phase 4 — Return to Performance (Months 6+)
For surgical patients returning to sport, we run a final battery of strength, hop and movement testing before clearing you for full return. ACL and shoulder stabilisation patients in particular benefit from this gatekeeping step to reduce re-injury risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
For most procedures, rehab begins within the first one to two weeks. Some surgeries (rotator cuff, ACL) follow strict surgeon timelines — we coordinate the start date with your surgeon’s rooms.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required for private patients. WorkCover, DVA Gold/White Card, and NDIS participants are accepted with the appropriate paperwork in place.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by procedure. A meniscectomy may need 4 to 6 sessions; an ACL reconstruction typically 20 to 30 sessions over 9 to 12 months. We give you a clear estimate after the initial assessment.
Can I do exercises at home?
Yes — every session includes a take-home program. Consistent home exercise is the single biggest predictor of outcome in surgical rehab.
Will my private health fund cover post-op physio?
Most extras-level policies cover physiotherapy. We HICAPS-direct-bill on the spot so you only pay the gap.
Do you treat overseas patients holidaying on the Gold Coast?
Yes. We regularly support patients recovering from surgery while on the Gold Coast with continuation-of-care programs we coordinate with their home physiotherapist.
