Plantar Wart Treatment Compared: 1064nm Laser vs Cryotherapy vs SWIFT

1064nm laser, cryotherapy or SWIFT microwave — which plantar wart treatment is right for you? A Gold Coast podiatrist breaks down the options.

Plantar warts are caused by a strain of HPV that gets in through tiny breaks in the skin of the sole. Most are stubborn — pharmacy paints chase them around for months without finishing the job. At Ace Health Centre on the Gold Coast we offer three professional options: high-intensity 1064nm laser therapy, cryotherapy, and SWIFT microwave. Here’s how they actually compare.

Option 1: 1064nm High-Intensity Laser

The laser delivers focused energy deep into the wart, disrupting its blood supply and triggering an immune response. It’s our go-to for warts that are large, deep, painful or have failed previous treatment.

  • Sessions: typically 1–3, spaced 4–6 weeks apart
  • Pain: a sharp warm sensation during pulses; mild for 1–2 days after
  • Downtime: none — you walk straight out
  • Best for: stubborn, deep, painful or athlete-blocking warts

Option 2: Cryotherapy (Medical-Grade Freeze)

A cotton-tip applicator delivers liquid nitrogen at –196 °C straight to the wart. The cold destroys the wart cells; the body clears the rest. Cheap, effective for newer warts, and an excellent option in children.

  • Sessions: 4–8, spaced 2–3 weeks apart
  • Pain: brief sharp cold sting; mild ache the same evening
  • Downtime: none, occasional small blister at the site
  • Best for: small, newer warts; needle-shy patients; budget-conscious

Option 3: SWIFT Microwave Therapy

SWIFT delivers controlled microwave energy 2–3 mm into the skin. It heats the wart tissue without breaking the skin, recruiting the immune system to recognise and destroy the virus.

  • Sessions: typically 3, spaced 4 weeks apart
  • Pain: 2–3 seconds of intense heat per pulse — sharp but very brief
  • Downtime: none. No dressings, no creams, you can swim or train the next day
  • Best for: patients who want minimum sessions and zero aftercare

How We Choose

Your podiatrist will look at the wart’s age, size, depth and location, your pain tolerance, your sport, your budget and whether previous treatments have failed. For a single, fresh wart on a child we lean to cryotherapy. For a stubborn 6-month wart in a footballer we lean to laser. For “I want this dealt with in three appointments and I’m done” we lean to SWIFT.

What All Three Have in Common

  • No cutting, no stitches, no time off work
  • Done in clinic by a registered podiatrist
  • Often partially rebated by private health extras

Frequently Asked Questions

Why didn’t the chemist treatment work? Over-the-counter acids only reach the surface. Plantar warts grow inward under thick skin, so the active ingredient rarely gets deep enough to clear the virus.

Can the wart come back? Yes — HPV lives on skin, so reinfection is possible. We’ll give you a take-home plan to reduce the risk: dry your feet thoroughly, change socks daily, and avoid sharing flip-flops or showers.

Are these treatments safe in kids? Cryotherapy and SWIFT both have strong paediatric track records. Laser is reserved for older children and adults.
