If the same toe has been ingrown two, three, four times — conservative trimming isn’t working. The fix is a tiny, well-tolerated procedure called a partial nail avulsion with phenolisation, performed in clinic by your podiatrist. Around 95% of patients never have another ingrown toenail on that side. Here’s exactly what to expect at Ace Health Centre. At Ace Health Centre we provide Permanent Ingrown Toenail Surgery tailored to your needs. For general background on ingrown toenails, see Healthdirect.
Who Needs Ingrown Toenail Surgery?
We recommend permanent surgery when:
- The same toe has been ingrown more than once
- The nail shape is heavily curved or involuted
- The skin sulcus has built up granulation tissue (proud flesh)
- Conservative trims keep working — for two months — and then fail
- You play sport in tight footwear (footy boots, ski boots, dance flats)
How the Procedure Works
The whole appointment runs 45–60 minutes. The active surgical part is around 15 minutes.
- Local anaesthetic. Two small injections at the base of the toe. Once it’s numb, you feel pressure only.
- Nail edge removal. The offending sliver of nail (around 2–3 mm) is lifted out from the side. The rest of the nail is left intact and looks completely normal.
- Phenolisation. A medical-grade phenol solution is applied to the nail matrix on that side. This is what makes the result permanent — that strip of nail simply doesn’t grow back.
- Dressing. A bulky dry dressing goes on the toe. You leave in a thong or open shoe.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients walk out, drive themselves home, and are back at a desk job the same day. Tradies and athletes usually take 2–3 days off heavy work. We see you at:
- Day 2 — first dressing change
- Day 7 — review and next dressing
- Week 4 — final check
Pain is generally managed with paracetamol. Swimming returns at week 4 once healed.
Why Patients Choose Ace Health Centre
Our Gold Coast podiatrists perform nail surgery weekly. We use sterile single-use packs, modern phenol protocols, and follow a strict review schedule so nothing is left to chance. Health funds with extras cover almost always rebate a portion of the procedure.
Common Concerns Before Booking
Will my nail look normal afterwards? Yes. We only treat the offending edge — usually 2–3 mm — and the rest of the nail looks unchanged. Most people can’t tell the difference cosmetically.
Is it safe in summer / for swimmers? Yes, but plan to be out of pools and the ocean for the first 4 weeks while it heals. After that you’re back to normal.
What about diabetics? Selected diabetic patients are excellent candidates — but we’ll do a careful vascular and neurological screen before booking surgery.
