If you’ve tried supermarket insoles and your feet still hurt, you’re not alone. Off-the-shelf supports are designed for an average foot — and almost no one has an average foot. At Ace Health Centre on the Gold Coast we manufacture custom orthotics through the MotionX Orthotics Lab using clinical 3D scanning and CAD-driven 3D printing. The result is a device built for one foot only — yours.

Why “Custom” Actually Matters

A retail insole tries to cushion. A custom orthotic controls how your foot loads the ground at every step. That difference matters when you’re managing heel pain, arch collapse, knee tracking, or chronic Achilles overload. Real customisation requires three things — accurate capture of your foot shape, a prescription from a podiatrist who watched you walk, and a manufacturing process that can hit tight tolerances.

How MotionX 3D-Printed Orthotics Are Made

The MotionX workflow at Ace Health Centre runs as follows:

  • 3D laser scan of each foot in a corrected, neutral position
  • Video gait analysis to capture how you actually load the foot dynamically
  • A prescription written by your podiatrist — posting, depth, materials and flex
  • CAD design of the shell, then SLS 3D printing in a precision polymer
  • Top-cover, posting and final fit-check in clinic

Because nothing is hand-ground, the device matches the prescription to within a fraction of a millimetre — and we can reprint an identical pair from your file years later.

Who Benefits Most

MotionX 3D-printed orthotics suit patients who:

  • Have plantar fasciitis, heel pain or arch fatigue that returns when they stop wearing supports
  • Need a thinner, lighter device for dress shoes, sport or work boots
  • Have asymmetry between feet — common after injury or surgery
  • Are runners, hospitality staff or tradies on their feet all day
  • Have failed with off-the-shelf or chemist insoles

3D-Printed vs Off-the-Shelf — The Honest Comparison

Off-the-shelf insoles are cheap and fine for short-term cushioning. They aren’t a treatment. A custom 3D-printed device is a clinical tool — measured, prescribed and reproducible. Most patients notice the difference within the first week of wear, and find the orthotics last 3–5 years with relatively heavy use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a pair of MotionX orthotics last? Most patients get 3–5 years out of a pair with daily wear. Top covers can be replaced separately when they wear, which extends life further.

Will I need to break them in? Yes — we recommend wearing them 2 hours on day one and adding 1–2 hours each day. Most people are in them all day by the end of week one.

Can I move them between shoes? Absolutely. The dress versions are designed to slip in and out of multiple shoes. The hard sport pair lives in your trainers.
