Ingrown toenails are one of the most common — and most ignored — reasons people limp around for weeks before doing anything about it. Left alone, a small irritation becomes an infected, throbbing toe that interferes with shoes, sport and sleep. The good news: a single appointment with a podiatrist usually settles things quickly, and a one-off procedure can stop the problem coming back forever.
What Causes Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail happens when the side of the nail grows into the surrounding skin instead of along the top of it. Common causes include:
- Cutting nails too short or down the corners
- Tight football boots, ski boots or work boots
- A stubbed toe or dropped weight on the toe
- Naturally curved or “involuted” nail shape
- Repeated picking or pulling at the corners
When You Should See a Podiatrist
Book in if any of the following are true:
- Pain when shoes touch the toe, or when you push off walking
- Redness, swelling or pus around the nail edge
- The nail edge feels hard, ridged or “buried”
- You’ve tried trimming it yourself and it’s getting worse
- You have diabetes, poor circulation or take blood thinners — these need professional care from the first sign
What Happens at Your Appointment
Most ingrown toenails are resolved in a single 30-minute visit with one of our Gold Coast podiatrists. We’ll:
- Numb the toe locally if needed (rarely required for a first conservative trim)
- Carefully remove the offending spike of nail and clear the sulcus
- Treat any infection and dress the toe
- Show you the right way to cut the nail going forward
You walk straight back out in your normal shoe.
For Recurrent Ingrown Toenails — Permanent Surgery
If the same toe keeps coming back, a partial nail avulsion with phenolisation is a small in-clinic procedure that permanently stops the offending edge of nail from regrowing. Around 95% of patients never have another ingrown toenail on that side. We’ll talk you through it if conservative care isn’t enough.
Common Questions Before Your First Visit
Will it hurt? A simple conservative trim is usually painless — most patients are surprised at how easy it is. If the spike is deep or infected, we offer local anaesthetic so you feel pressure only.
Can I keep playing sport? Yes. Most patients are back in normal footwear straight after the appointment. We’ll only ask you to take a few days off if there’s an active infection.
Is it covered by health funds? Most private health extras with podiatry cover offer a rebate. We process HICAPS on the spot.
