Exercise Physiology · Chronic conditions

Chronic condition exercise physiology on the Gold Coast.

Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, COPD, osteoporosis, autoimmune conditions, post-cancer recovery, kidney disease — exercise is medicine for almost every chronic condition, with stronger evidence than most medications. Delivered by people who know how to prescribe it for the condition you actually have.

Why exercise is a clinical intervention, not just “moving more”.

The advice “get more exercise” is medically correct and practically useless for most people with a chronic condition. The condition is exactly why “just go for a walk” doesn’t work — tolerance is reduced, response to exertion is different, and the wrong dose can make symptoms worse.

An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) is the allied health profession trained to prescribe exercise as a clinical intervention for chronic conditions. We work to the same evidence base as the international guidelines for exercise in your specific condition — ACSM, EIM Australia, and condition-specific guidelines (Diabetes Australia, Heart Foundation, etc).

We work alongside your GP, specialist and any other allied health team members. Communication back to the broader team is standard.

Conditions we commonly program for

Six chronic conditions where exercise prescription helps most.

These are the conditions where the international guidelines specifically recommend supervised exercise as a first-line intervention.

01
Type 2 diabetes
Exercise improves insulin sensitivity more reliably than most medications. Combined aerobic and resistance training is the gold standard.
02
Cardiovascular disease
Stable heart disease, post-MI, post-revascularisation. Graded exercise prescription with intensity monitoring, often bridging hospital cardiac rehab.
03
Osteoporosis & osteopenia
Weight-bearing and resistance training based on the international osteoporosis guidelines. Loading the bones in ways the condition can tolerate.
04
COPD and respiratory conditions
Pulmonary rehab principles applied in the clinic. Breath retraining, conditioning, exacerbation management.
05
Cancer recovery & survivorship
Exercise during and after cancer treatment improves outcomes and reduces side effects. Programming that respects fatigue and changing treatment phases.
06
Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions
RA, lupus, IBD, chronic fatigue syndrome. Programming that respects the unpredictable nature of these conditions and the importance of pacing.
